In 1893, Kokichi Mikimoto created the world's first cultured pearls. He would be richly rewarded for his efforts. Today, the place where he first farmed his hemispherical pearls is known as Mikimoto Pearl Island.
Japan's first boutique to specialize in pearls opened in 1899 in Tokyo's Ginza shopping district.
Mikimoto's catalog has since expanded to include diamonds and other precious stones. The brand has several boutiques across Japan, as well as on Fifth Avenue in NYC, on Paris' Place Vendôme, and on New Bond Street in London. Mikimoto's fine jewelry has fans around the world!

Mikimoto crafts their jewelry out of yellow, white, and rose gold as well as platinum. They're also fond of pairing their lovely pearls with equally beautiful diamonds. For example, they combine them to form glistening dewdrops in the Morning Dew collection.
Their designers gather inspiration from flower petals and schools of fish swimming in the sea. There are also more modern designs, such as pearl jewelry modeled after the planet Saturn.
If you only associate Mikimoto with classic pearl necklaces, prepare to be surprised! A necklace from the Pearls in Motion collection can be adjusted to achieve several different looks.
Of course, there are also plenty of single, double, and triple-strand pearl necklaces. However, these also vary greatly: from long to short, and black pearls to colorful gradients. The pearls are accented by their finish or other elements, like flower-petal inspired charms.
Mikimoto's pearl and diamond necklaces are a feast for the eyes – especially those with pavé diamond spheres!
You may also be interested in their enchanting pearl pendants. There are even playful teddy bear pendants in addition to traditional and modern motifs. Of course, you'll find beautiful cherry blossom charms as well!
No pearl necklace is complete without a matching bracelet. While you're at it, why not add a pair of pearl earrings?
You can round off the look with a pearl ring. Perhaps Mikimoto has just what you're looking for? If you're getting ready to walk down the aisle, a set of pearl jewelry looks stunning on any bride.
